The first Pokemon Trading Card Game was developed in Japan and was based on the 1996 Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow Game Boy by Nintendo. No one knew back then how popular these cards would become – with single cards now being sold for up to $1.2 million on eBay.
In 1998, Pokemon made its way to North America with Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue and also launched its animated series. Just a year later, it released its first animated movie in the US and introduced its trading card game in North America and Europe.
